Description

For most of the Pacific War, Fuso stayed in the Inland Sea as a training ship. She entered Kure Navy Yard for a brief refit in February 1942 (during which her main gun barrels were replaced), and she sortied with the Combined Fleet for the Battle of Midway, during which she was 500 miles west of the battle and saw no action whatsoever. A second refit in July 1943 saw the installation of a Type 21 air / surface-search radar, twenty-one (two twin- and seventeen single-mount) 25-mm. antiaircraft guns, and ten single-mount 13.2-mm machine guns. Stationed primarily at Truk from August 1943 onward, Fuso evacuated that base with the majority of the Combined Fleet in February 1944 and returned to training duties in the Inland Sea.

Originally earmarked for participation in Operation: "Kon" in May 1944, she instead entered dry dock in Kure Navy Yard for another refit, during which she received two Type 13 air-search and two Type 22 surface-search radars, as well as seventy-eight (eight triple-, sixteen twin-, and seventeen single-mount) 25-mm. antiaircraft guns. She resumed training duties upon completion of that refit in early June, but the Allied invasion of the Marianas changed everything...
